ASSESSMENTS
Siyaphambili, assessment tools have been developed by a group of specialists in the Adult Education and Training field. These tools have been widely used by all learners who wanted to be RPL’d.The placement instruments have been used in different organizations for various purposes e.g, pre- employment, placement into AET classes, Learnerships, promotions, linking up with work skills plans etc. What makes these tools different from traditional tests is that we focus more on skills / competencies that people have acquired. The placements are in line with the National Unit Standards, which is set by the SAQA and is linked to specific outcomes as outlined in these Unit Standards. These assessment tools tests learners’ competency and prior knowledge, this places the learner from being totally illiterate to a FET level (Further Education and Training) and beyond.
The duration for each assessment (literacy or numeracy) should take the average person between 1½ - 2 hours per assessment. Specific times can be arranged for the assessments that would not impact on the organizations operations. A comprehensive report on each learner’s performance is then forwarded to the organization. Learners, who have already been through an IEB exam would be excluded from this process, provided they have been in an AET programme in the last 12 months.
CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS
There are two important aspects in the provision of a quality TRAINING and HRD programme delivery. These are (1) a sound management and delivery strategy; and (2) an educational support service which ensures effective learning takes place in the classroom. The critical aspect of managing large TRAINING programmes lies mainly in an effective communication approach that ensures all the stakeholders are integrally involved and informed about the process of adult education provision.
A fully developed reporting system is in place, so that stakeholders can easily follow the progress of each learner. Qualified and experienced facilitators/trainers provide on-site training and training coordinators are assigned to ensure transparency and the effective monitoring of the learning process.
SIYAPHAMBILI provides all participants access to higher education opportunities to further their education and job prospects.
SIYAPHAMBILI has developed innovative approaches to adult learning materials and methodologies. These approaches provide a unique learning experience for adults by viewing learning as an empowerment process. The context from which the adult learners are drawn is used as a reference in order to ensure that the learning process and contents are relevant to our diverse learners.
DELIVERY OF AET PROGRAMMES
SIYAPHAMBILI has had over 20 000 learners from different organizations using different learning approaches passing through its AET Programmes each year. The programmes are provided both on a part-time as well as a fulltime basis. Classes can take place in the very rural parts of South Africa as well as in the more urbanized industrial centres.
We champion effective face-to-face service delivery methods
Learners pass through the structured AET learning experience using these three approaches, which meet their needs for recognition of prior learning, innovative adult teaching and learning methodologies, relevant learning materials, continuous assessment and external assessment that evaluate the learners against national unit standards and provides for national accreditation.
Classes normally run for 2 hours at a time and for 4 or 5 days a week. It takes approximately 180 hours for a learner to progress through one AET level in one subject on a part-time basis. Given the times set it would take a class of learners 6 to 8 months to complete a learning area (subject).
